With a population of less than 200,000 (extremely small by Chinese standards), the oasis town of Dunhuang, along the route of the ancient Silk Road, features this ultramodern pedestrian area along the Danghe River. The central government has poured vast resources into creating a tourist town (with the sand dunes of the Singing Sand Mountain in the background). The town sits at the edge of the Gobi Desert. Dunhuang, Gansu Province, northwest China.
