Grape drying houses in the 8 km. long Grape Valley outside Turpan, Xinjiang Province, China. Turpan is a desert oasis. Water for agriculture comes from an impressive ancient karez irrigation system that routes water from the neighboring Tian Shan Mountains via underground tunnels. Grape and raisin production in Turpan accounts for over eighty percent of China's total, making China the world's third-largest producer of raisins and the world's largest producer of green raisins.
